In S15 E71 of the Bitcoin Takeover podcast, Amir Taaki tells the story of the many changes he's made to the DarkFi technology: starting from MimbleWimble, going through Ring Signatures, and then finally finding the right kind of Zero Knowledge proofs. This process took a few years – but DarkFi is scheduled to launch in 2025. If it becomes successful, it can also become a privacy layer for BTC – or even a ZK rollup on top of the Bitcoin base layer.
