Matthew unpacks the truth about the U.S. money supply, explaining the differences between M0, M1, M2, and M3—and why the Fed’s numbers don’t tell the full story. He walks through how the reclassification of savings accounts in 2020 dramatically inflated M1, and why M3 (which includes institutional money, repos, and money market funds) gives a clearer picture of actual dollar liquidity. Using a reconstructed version of M3, Matthew shows that the U.S. money supply hit $35.4 trillion by the end of 2024, and explains how repo markets and shadow banking have created a system far more complex than the average investor realizes. He also breaks down the role of Eurodollars, which aren’t even counted in these figures, yet represent trillions in offshore dollar liquidity. Finally, Matthew compares this to Bitcoin’s market cap, arguing that Bitcoin should only be measured against base money (M0 + reserves)—not M3—since it’s a bearer asset, not a credit instrument. As of 2024, Bitcoin has reached 33% of the U.S. monetary base, up from just 18% in 2021, a signal of growing adoption and market trust.
