Who Really Controls Global Money and Why Bitcoin Matters

January 26, 2026

Show Notes

This episode introduces one of Matthew’s most important new frameworks yet, comparing global monetary power across democracies and autocracies and what that balance means for Bitcoin. He opens by unveiling new charts that track the global monetary base across major geopolitical blocs, separating countries that broadly respect rule of law and private property from those that rely on repression and coercion. While total global base money peaked above 30 trillion dollars during COVID, it has since contracted to roughly 27 trillion among the major economies tracked, driven by inflation control and relative dollar strength. Matthew walks through how monetary power has shifted over time. Russia briefly reached nearly five percent of global central bank money before collapsing to under two percent following the global financial crisis and its own imperial ambitions. China’s share surged after 2000 but has stagnated since COVID. Meanwhile NATO aligned economies have regained share, reinforcing the idea that free systems still outperform over long horizons despite political noise. He then connects this analysis to Bitcoin and gold. Bitcoin continues to follow its power curve and sits between the 40th and 50th percentile near 90,000 dollars. Gold, by contrast, has surged to more than 2.4 times its long term trend, approaching historically rare territory. When Bitcoin is priced in gold, it sits below the 10th percentile, implying extreme relative cheapness.
